PLM's reply to if we should purchase a harvester
I would highly advise against any harvesting due to the fact that almost all of our management is for invasive species ( Milfoil, Starry Stonewort , Curly leaf). In particular Milfoil & Starry Stonewort are an issue as they spread by fragmentation, so harvesting is the worst option for those two species. Additionally harvesters are not designed to get into tight areas or around docks, which tend to be shallower and harder to maneuver in. A harvester would make a mess by disrupting sediment and leaving plant debris behind. Years ago before the spread of invasive plants PLM was one of the largest harvesting company in the state but with the addition of the new invasive species we have now reduced our harvesting division to one machine. The only harvesting we suggest now is natives plants due to the issues of spreading the invasive plants I’ve mentioned. Last year in particular only small spot treatments for natives were conducted so the overall cost of any harvester would not be justified. Also if natives plants issues were to arise that would needed to be harvested we could offer our harvesting services for a much more cost effective options rather than the HOA owning a machine.
